The island Krk is the second island in the Mediterranean Sea by size, and the most northern that is connected to the mainland by a bridge. This beutiful island has a nice climate with a annual average temperature 4 degrees higher than elsewhere. 

Krk has a lot of little islands, beaches with rocks, pebbles and sand, jagged coasts rich of bays and inlets. The island is a succeeding of little town faced on the sea quite different one to another but everyone has its charm and deserves a visit.You can move from one place to another: from town to a beach or restaurants Image-krkand "konoba" to quiet surronding and feel untouched nature that's here more then beautiful.

The small town of Krk lies on the western coast of the island, was the Roman colony and the seat of the Frankopan family but today it is main tourist destination like it's all the island.

The Island of Krk History and Culture

The first inhabitants of the island were the Illyrians - Japodes and Liburnians and after them came the Greeks. In 6th century C roats started to colonize the island and soon became the majority. In 15th century Krk was under the reign of Venice, France, Austiran-Hungarian Monarchy, Germany, Yugoslavia nad finaly in 20th century becomes a part of the Independent State of Croatia. The islet Košljun is placed near the settlement Punat on Krk. It is famous for the Franciscan Monastery. The church of Our Lady of Health was built before the 12th century. It was the first Romanesque monastery in the city of Krk. Not far away from this church is placed the Francirean Monastery and c hurch of St. Franjo. It was built in 13th century and it was reconstructed but it kept its historical characteristics. The most fascinatig sacral object is the Romanesque Chatedral of  Krk. The city walls are kept almost completely.  The main square Kamplin has been used in many different purposes in the past. On its  border parts it used to be a gymnasium and a thermae and in the middle were held knights games. On this square you can se the remains of an ancient pillars.

The Literature Festival Pontes is a manifestation that is held for 11 years. It offers its visitors a literature, musical, theatrical, film and intercultural programme. In Krk are working many cultural and scenic organizations that organize cultural manifestations and festivals that have theatrical and musical-scenic character. The galleries in Krk are: Dagmar, Decumanus, Fortis, Helena Lapidarij, Krčanka, Leut, Mozaiko...

The Island of Krk Museums

The only museum is the one on the islet Košljun located in the old monastery. It keeps an ethnographic collection that includes many objects of fishermans and villagers and folk costumes. There is also a zoological collection with beautiful and rare shells and natural phenomens such as a lamb with one eye.

Krk is a region that doesn't sleep during the summer. In the settlement Malinska is located discotheque Crossroad. It is consisted of two part: the open part where are usually live concerts and after a DJ and the upper part that is inside where you can hear house and techno music. In this the biggest disco on the island great parties 'til dawn are guaranteed. In the center of the city Krk you can also find disco-cocktail bars Jungle and Volsonis.
